Crimes of the Future

Erm… There’s a lot going on in this. A lot of really big, really grand ideas concerning what the future of the human race might be. At the centre of it all is a guy who’s kind of in the middle of a Venn diagram of all the themes. I suppose the crux is quite clever – that in the future humans are synthetically evolving to eat our own industrial waste. That leads to us growing new organs, which we see as bad things, so we remove them. But that leads to us all being masochists who torture one another rather than having sex.

It’s all pretty absurd, but equally quite believable. The problem is that the plot is driven by this guy also being a performance artist, and his partner of sorts wanting to push the envelope in what they can achieve in their shows, which are essentially just live surgery. That being the driver behind such a rich idea, I felt, just weighed it all down and made it feel quite ponderous. I think it also highlighted that some of it was likely motivated by wanting to shock the audience, which is always a huge turn off.

We have to talk about the CGI too. There’s a scene where a kid eats a bathroom bin, and it’s so plainly clear that this bin is CGI. Would it not have been cheaper to bake a big cylindrical biscuit or something? There’s so much in this that would’ve been far more visceral if there were more practical effects, and that’s a real shame.
