Underneath it all, there is quite a good, sweet film here. The problem is, that film already exists – it’s called Ikiru and it’s much better than this. There’s nothing overly offensive about this remake, I just have to ask why anyone bothered making it in 2022 if the idea was just to make it a British period piece?

As well as being transported to Britain at some point in the past, it’s also been chopped up a bit too much. I can only assume for no other reason than to give it a short enough run time that it can’t be held responsible for a sleeping audience. Things are set up and then paid off without much in between and it all just happens too quickly to feel anything for anyone. I suppose it just feels a bit throwaway. That isn’t what Ikiru was ever supposed to be.

The bare bones of it will always be emotive on some level, because that’s just what the story is. The problem is that it’s presented here in a twee little British Hallmark aesthetic, and it’s just irritating as a result. I’m sure that will have its audience, but ultimately it feels like a disservice.
