The Outfit

I really liked the first three minutes. Just after, I realised what they were going for with the title. “The Outfit” refers to a group of people undertaking an activity together, as well as a set of clothes worn together. Being a film about a tailor who gets caught up with a bunch of criminals, it’s something that seems quite clever at first and then feels more and more contrived the more thought you put into it. They even name this criminal gang “The Outfit” for good measure. 

It’s quite clearly intended as an homage to the giallo genre, and it does all the usual set ups and payoffs, but the problem is it’s just never very interesting. The central character, the tailor, is someone I really enjoyed spending time with, watching him among his craft and just listening to him speak about something he was very convincingly a master of. But then when the stuff that was supposed to be exciting happens, all the stuff with the criminals, it all gets terribly dull and lazy. There’s nothing to get invested in because they’re criminals for the sake of being criminals, and you don’t find out why he’s caught up in it all until the final (poorly written) twist. 

The biggest shame in this is that Mark Rylance’s performance was really good, but no-one or nothing else around him worked. If the film was literally just two hours of him making suits and talking about all the intricacies of the craft, this could’ve been great. Instead, it just ends up as pulp.
